Robogals is a non-profit, student-run organization operating in over 10 countries, tallying up to more than 30 chapters internationally. With the aim of increasing diversity in STEM-related careers, Robogals UCalgary works in partnership with several Calgary schools and the Calgary Public Library to host a variety of workshops ranging from building baking soda and vinegar rockets to coding MBots and Arduinos, appealing to a range of elementary-aged students.
While staying true to the organization's founding focus of encouraging an inclusive environment in STEM for young girls, Robogals UCalgary has been inspired to expand its reach in recent years.
Expanding Our Reach
A more inclusive approach of working towards breaking down accessibility barriers in different forms has been adopted, with piloting initiatives of travelling to schools located on reserves outside of Calgary. In fall 2023, we developed a relationship with Nakoda Elementary located on the Stoney Reserve in Mînî Thnî, Alberta, and continue to host a full day of workshops with different classrooms at the school annually.
We have also recently piloted a project of working with rural, isolated communities, shipping workshop kits to Muskoti Elementary School in Moberly Lake, British Columbia, expanding the breadth of our outreach beyond local communities.
Hack the Bias
New to the team's annual portfolio is Hack the Bias, a free of cost hackathon hosted at the University of Calgary's main campus prompting young innovators to design solutions to challenges around justice, equity, health, and accessibility.
Approaching the second annual Hack the Bias competition in January 2026, the team is ambitiously planning on piloting Calgary's first 36-hour hackathon, an additional 24 hours from last year's event. For this unique experience, an additional tier has also been added, extending the invite from high school and first year undergraduate students (Tier 2) to now second year and higher undergraduates as well (Tier 1).
Pre-registration is now open - come design modern technological solutions for inclusion, equity, and change!
